Fighting Illini head coach Brad Underwood announced that Mihailo Petrovic has signed a Big Ten Athletics Aid Agreement with the University of Illinois.
Petrovic, a 6-foot-3-inch, 180-pound point guard from Prokuplje, Serbia, will join the Fighting Illini after competing for five clubs in his home country over the last five seasons. Most recently, he played for KK Mega Basket in the Adriatic League (ABA) First Division. This club is known for producing NBA player Nikola Jokic. Petrovic also has experience playing on the Serbian National Team at both youth and senior levels.
"Mihailo is the consummate point guard," Underwood said. "He has a great understanding of how the game is played. He has tremendous speed, and, being a little bit older, also has a physicality about him which we like and is needed in the Big Ten. He excels in ball screens and has all the finishes; that is a big part of his game. Mihailo has been a prolific scorer at times, or a great facilitator when needed; he takes what the game gives him. We are excited to add someone with his talent, experience, and maturity to our backcourt."
In 30 games this past season for KK Mega Basket in both ABA league play and the Serbian RK Cup, Petrovic averaged 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game while shooting over 49% from the field and 33% from three-point range. He had seven double-doubles with points and assists during that stretch.
Before joining KK Mega Basket, Petrovic played one season with OKK Beograde in Serbia’s Basketball League (KLS), where he led his team with averages of 21.2 points and 6.8 assists per game while shooting 50% from the field.
During the 2022-23 season with KK Dunav in KLS competition, he averaged more than 20 points per contest across five games before making his ABA debut for KK Borac Cacak.
On international duty representing Serbia in FIBA events such as the U20 European Championship and U19 World Cup, Petrovic appeared in a total of twenty games at various age levels since 2019. In senior national team action at Eurobasket Qualifiers earlier this year, he contributed four points to help Serbia defeat Denmark as part of an undefeated group stage campaign.
Petrovic began his basketball development with KK Probasket Prokuplje before moving to KK Partizan’s youth system in 2019.
