Champaign County Community Coalition discusses civility and community collaboration

The Champaign County Community Coalition on April 9, 2025, convened for its monthly meeting, which featured a panel discussion on key issues such as civility, compassion, climate change, and violent crime. The panelists included Urbana Police Chief Larry Boone, Champaign Police Chief Timothy Tyler, TRI Director Karen Simms, and Community Relations Manager Jorge Elvir. They focused on community needs and methods to enhance collaboration.

The presenters stressed the importance of providing holistic support services for both children and families. They highlighted the need to reduce siloed efforts, and instead, increase knowledge and resource sharing across the county. There was a unified message encouraging community involvement, with the sentiment that change requires everyone's active participation.

The meeting continued with updates on significant programs. "News, Brews, and Beatz" will be returning, promising enhancements. Nationally, high school students are engaging in the ACT-SO program, culminating in competitions that offer scholarships and rewards.

Women In Need (WIN) Recovery discussed their impactful program supporting women's recovery, with members sharing personal success stories. The Black Mental Health and Wellness Conference is slated for October 20, 2025, with registration opening soon. The Champaign Neighborhood Networking Conference is scheduled for May 9, with registration actively ongoing. Copper Creek Church representatives talked about upcoming tours of the African American Heritage Trail.
