On April 10, Champaign Police collaborated with McKinley Health Center at the Special Populations Health Fair on the University of Illinois campus. Joe Lamberson, Assistant to the Police Chief, addressed attendees about scam safety, advising them to safeguard their finances by using caution online and monitoring their accounts for suspicious activities.
The Champaign Police emphasize the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent scams. These steps include setting up regular credit monitoring or freezing credit accounts, routinely checking bank statements and online banking for fraudulent transactions, being cautious when answering calls or responding to emails and text messages, and avoiding clicking on any suspicious links.
The police also recommend hanging up and not sending payment to anyone requesting immediate payment, even if they seem credible. They advise, "A healthy dose of skepticism can save you time and money! If someone calls claiming to be from a specific company, wanting payment of a past-due bill, remember to hang up and call the company directly at a listed phone number to confirm that the funds are due!"
