The Big Ten Conference has named athletes Matthew Vu Nguyen and Ian Sandoval to its first-ever All-Freshman Team. This announcement was made on April 9, following the athletes' performances during the championships held recently on April 4-5.
Nguyen took part in the competitions on Day 1, showcasing his skills on the high bar and parallel bars. He scored a 12.800 on parallel bars, securing the 19th place overall and ranking third among the freshmen. On the high bar, his score of 12.100 earned him the 16th position overall, while also being the third best among freshmen. Nguyen hails from Houston, Texas.
Sandoval participated on both days of the championships. On Day 1, he achieved a career-high score of 13.750 on parallel bars, earning fourth place in the all-around category. He advanced to Day 2 on parallel bars and high bar, finishing in the eighth and tenth positions, respectively.
The Illinois team, which includes both Nguyen and Sandoval, is set to proceed to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for April 18 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
