The Champaign Fire Department quickly responded to a fire at a commercial and multi-family apartment building located in the 100 block of E. University Ave. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 8:40 p.m. The fire crew's rapid response ensured the fire was promptly extinguished.

The firefighters were called to the scene by an automatic alarm from the two-story structure. Upon arrival, the team found that the building's sprinkler system was already active. Consequently, the issue was elevated to a working fire. The small fire originated between the first-floor commercial area and the second-floor residences. The firefighting team efficiently used a single hose line, confining the fire to its original location.

The origin of the fire was determined to be accidental, linked to energized electrical equipment. Fortunately, there were no injuries to either firefighters or residents.
