Illinois tennis team fall to Michigan State in away match

The University of Illinois tennis team, ranked 24th, was defeated by Michigan State, ranked 31st, with a score of 4-0. The match took place on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. This result brought Illinois to an overall record of 12-8, with 5-4 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State advanced to 13-7 in total and 8-2 in conference matches.

The Spartans initially secured their position by winning the doubles point at No. 1 and 3. The No. 2 doubles match between Illinois' William Mroz and Zach Viiala against their opponents was left unfinished at 4-4.

In the singles matches, Michigan State achieved straight-set wins at No. 5 and 6, leading them closer to victory. The final point was clinched at No. 3 singles. In the top singles showdown, Kenta Miyoshi from Illinois played against Aristotelis Thanos of Michigan State. Miyoshi initially took the lead by winning the first set 6-4, however, Thanos leveled the match by winning the second set 7-6(4). The decisive third set remained unfinished.

At No. 2 singles, William Mroz played against Ozan Baris. Mroz took the first set 6-4, but Baris responded by winning the second 6-4. The third set entered a tiebreak before also being left undecided.

The No. 4 singles featured a match between Zach Viiala and Matthew Forbes. Forbes won the first set 7-5, while Viiala responded by winning the second set 6-3. With Viiala holding a 6-5 advantage in the third set, the match ended unfinished due to the earlier decision at No. 3 singles.

Illinois will next host two home matches. They will face Ohio State on Friday and Penn State on Saturday for Senior Night.
