Illinois baseball clinched a series win over Maryland after securing a doubleheader sweep at Illinois Field. The Illini, now with a record of 17-11 and 6-5 in the Big Ten, delivered a 7-4 win in the first game, followed by a decisive 15-3 victory in the second game.
In the opening game, Tyler Schmitt pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits and recording three strikeouts. Zach Bates earned his second save this season, throwing 2.1 perfect innings with four strikeouts. Jack Zebig and Jacob Schroeder contributed multi-hit performances, while Greg LaChance and Kyle Schupmann added two RBIs each.
The momentum continued into the second game with Ben Plumley pitching six innings, conceding two unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts. LaChance and Zebig both hit home runs, with Zebig's three-run homer securing the walk-off win. Collin Jennings supported the offense with a three-run inside-the-park home run.
The series concludes tomorrow, with the Illini aiming for a sweep at home against Maryland.
