In Gainesville, Florida, the Illinois men's and women's track and field team concluded the Pepsi Florida Relays on April 5. Abria Smith made headlines by breaking a 17-year-old school record in the shot put with a throw of 17.58 meters, earning her a second-place finish. Her performance ranks as the seventh-best in the nation for the 2025 season and surpasses the previous record of 17.03 meters set by Olympic Medalist Aja Evans in 2008.

Kam Garrett secured second place in the high jump with a leap of 2.20 meters, the fourth-best nationally. Dewayne Johnson placed 10th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.87, marking the program's 10th-fastest time.

After a brief break, the Illinois track teams will compete next at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, and the UVA Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 18-19.
