A man from Champaign has been charged in connection with a shooting that took place in July 2024, resulting in the deaths of two teenagers and injuries to two others. The incident occurred in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive in Champaign. Police were called to the scene at 12:34 a.m. on July 28, 2024, after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found multiple individuals with apparent gunshot wounds.
Two of the victims, 18-year-olds George Dorris-Rodgers and Daniyjah Staple, both of Champaign, suffered life-threatening injuries. Dorris-Rodgers was shot in the chest, while Staple sustained gunshot wounds to her leg and torso. They were transported to a local hospital where they later died from their injuries. Additionally, a 25-year-old woman received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her arm, and a 15-year-old boy was treated for a similar wound to his leg.
As reported by the police investigation, individuals, including 22-year-old Corey Butler, were present in the parking lot at the apartment complex when shots were fired. The gunfire injured the four victims and caused damage to a vehicle. On March 27, 2025, following a detailed investigation by the Champaign Police Department, Butler was charged with multiple counts of murder and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. At the time of the charges, Butler was already held at the Champaign County Correctional Facility.
Although charges have been filed, the investigation is ongoing. The authorities are actively seeking witnesses and video footage that could be useful in the investigation. They have stated that updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
