Champaign Police responded promptly to a shooting incident reported on the evening of March 26, 2025. Officers were dispatched around 7:14 p.m. to the vicinity of the 2800 block of W. Kirby Avenue after reports of gunfire in the area. Detectives found evidence of shooting near Stratford Drive and Trafalgar Square but noted there were no immediate injuries at the scene.
Shortly thereafter, at approximately 7:28 p.m., a 22-year-old man from Champaign informed police that he had been injured by gunfire. Responding officers and emergency medical teams ensured he received timely medical treatment for a non-life-threatening wound to his leg. The man was taken to a local hospital and has since been released.
Champaign Police's investigation revealed that the victim was hit by gunshots that were fired from a vehicle while he was in a parking area. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear; however, authorities do not consider this to be a random act. The search for witnesses and surveillance footage continues, with investigators encouraging residents and businesses with external security cameras to aid in the inquiry. No suspects have been apprehended yet, and police have confirmed that their investigation is ongoing.

Champaign Police emphasized: "Information submitted to Crime Stoppers is completely anonymous. Calls are routed to a third-party national call center that receives your information, completes a tips information form, and then passes the information to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Caller ID tracking is not utilized by Crime Stoppers and conversations are not recorded."
Additionally, Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards for tips that lead to arrests: "$5,000 for tips that lead to an arrest in any homicide case, $2,500 for tips leading to an arrest in a felony crime involving a firearm, and up to $1,000 for tips leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for any other crime."
