Blake Smithback has been appointed as the offensive front assistant for the Illinois football program, announced Bret Bielema, the head coach. Prior to this role, Smithback was employed at Wisconsin-Whitewater as an assistant coach over the last three years.

"Blake is the son of a football coach and has a high football coaching IQ," said Bielema. "He has had success in his young career, first developing into a Big Ten offensive lineman and, most recently, being promoted and making a strong impact during his first coaching job at Whitewater. We are excited to add Blake to our staff."

Smithback expressed his enthusiasm in joining the team. "I am excited to join this program led by Coach Bielema," said Smithback. "I am looking forward to working with an incredible staff and talented group of student-athletes. The program is a proven winner that develops young men both on and off the field. I can't wait to contribute and keep pushing forward."

Smithback's coaching journey began at Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2022 as a graduate assistant. He was then promoted to a position coaching tight ends and fullbacks in 2023. During his time at Whitewater, he played a role in securing two Division III Playoffs berths and achieving 25 wins in three seasons from 2022 to 2024.

Originating from Waunakee, Wisconsin, Smithback was recognized as an All-State First Team player by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association during his high school senior year. He furthered his football career by playing college football for Wisconsin from 2017 to 2021, where he achieved four Academic All-Big Ten honors.

His family background in coaching includes his father, Jon, who has dedicated over 30 years to coaching high school football in Wisconsin.

Smithback completed his educational journey with a double major in accounting and management & human resources at Wisconsin in 2021.
