Illinois secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament's second round after defeating Xavier 86-73 at Fiserv Forum. The Fighting Illini, who are advancing for the second consecutive season, saw four players score in double figures.
Will Riley led Illinois with 22 points, marking his sixth game of the season scoring over 20 points. He also contributed four rebounds and two blocks while hitting three out of four attempts from beyond the arc. Tomislav Ivisic achieved his team-leading 11th double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, adding two blocks and an assist. Kasparas Jakucionis filled the stat sheet with 16 points, nine rebounds, and ten assists, going perfect from the free-throw line. Kylan Boswell added 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
The game started with Xavier taking an early lead before Illinois responded with a run to take control. The Illini maintained their advantage through strategic plays and timely scoring runs. Despite efforts by Xavier to close the gap, Illinois managed to hold onto their lead throughout the game.
With this victory, Illinois will face No. 3-seeded Kentucky on Sunday in Milwaukee.
