State Senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) has expressed concerns over Governor Pritzker's recent proposal to eliminate road districts and townships. During a press conference, Senator Rose warned that the plan could result in increased property taxes and negatively impact essential services such as snow plowing, cemeteries, and libraries.
"This is classic example of Chicago politicians trying to 'fix' something and not fully understanding all the ramifications of the change," stated Senator Rose. He argued that many constituents might face higher property taxes as counties and municipalities would have to compensate for the eliminated services, leading to either increased costs or significant service reductions.
Senator Rose emphasized that the Governor's proposal might not lead to greater efficiency but would instead burden local governments with additional responsibilities like snow plowing, road repairs, and cemetery maintenance. This shift could result in heightened property taxes or cuts to vital services.
"I have entire counties that don’t own a single piece of road equipment," Senator Rose explained. "Now if Pritzker gets his way, those services will fall back onto the county – except it will be more expensive to deliver." He noted that hiring labor at prevailing wage costs during storms would increase expenses significantly.
Senator Rose highlighted his past support for government streamlining where it benefits local citizens but criticized Governor Pritzker's approach as a "one-size-fits-all" solution. "I’ve always been an advocate for streamlining government and making it more efficient," he said. However, he believes this plan overlooks the unique needs of individual communities and taxpayers.
