Champaign Police responded to a shooting incident on the 1100 block of N. Third Street at 3:03 p.m., where they found a vehicle damaged by gunfire and a 31-year-old man with potentially life-threatening injuries inside. Officers provided emergency medical aid before the victim was transported to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The investigation suggests that the victim was in the vehicle when Zaire Herman, 22, also from Champaign, allegedly fired shots at him. Herman reportedly fled on foot but was soon apprehended nearby. He faces initial charges including aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated assault, and unlawful use of a weapon. Additional charges could follow as the investigation continues.

Despite an arrest being made, police are still investigating. They are seeking witnesses and video footage from the area to assist their inquiry. Residents or businesses with surveillance systems are encouraged to contact the police department for potential leads.

Champaign Police urge anyone with further information to call 217-351-4545. Information can be shared privately or anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 217-373-8477 (TIPS), visiting 373tips.com, or using the “P3 Tips” mobile app.

It is emphasized that all tips submitted to Crime Stoppers remain anonymous; calls are directed through a third-party center without caller ID tracking or recorded conversations.

All individuals involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
