Matthew Vu Nguyen has been recognized as the CGA Rookie of the Week, as announced by the organization on March 13. He shares this accolade with Jonah Soltz from Navy.
Nguyen's recent achievements include consecutive Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards on March 4 and 11. Competing for Illinois, Nguyen delivered an impressive performance last weekend. He achieved a career-high score of 14.250 on vault, tying for first place against Penn State, ranked sixth nationally. Additionally, he led his team on parallel bars with a score of 13.750 and concluded his day with a 13.350 on high bar.
Looking ahead, Nguyen and the Illinois team are set to compete at Ohio State on March 25 at 3 p.m. CT in their final regular-season event.
The College Gymnastics Association also announced other weekly awards for March 13, 2025: Josh Karnes from Penn State was named Gymnast of the Week, while Khoi Young from Stanford received Specialist of the Week honors.
