Illinois baseball faced a challenging game against Michigan, ultimately losing 6-5 after leading into the ninth inning. The match took place at Holman Stadium in Vero Beach, Florida.
Jack Zebig continued his strong performance with a home run for the second consecutive game. He went 1-for-4 at the plate, contributing three RBIs and scoring once.
Starting pitcher Ben Plumley did not factor into the decision. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out seven batters. Sam Reed provided relief pitching, giving up just one run over 3.1 innings and recording four strikeouts.
Michigan initially took a 2-0 lead before Illinois reduced the deficit in the third inning when Zebig walked with bases loaded. The Wolverines increased their lead to two runs again in the fifth inning. However, Illinois responded in the sixth inning with four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Zebig hit a two-run homer, and Greg LaChance along with Jacob Schroeder added RBI singles.
Despite holding a two-run advantage going into the ninth inning, Illinois allowed Michigan to score three times in that frame, resulting in a 6-5 loss for Illinois.
The series will conclude tomorrow as Illinois seeks to avoid a sweep by Michigan. The final game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. CT start at Holman Stadium within the Jackie Robinson Training Complex.
