Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen, City Of Champaign | City Of Champaign website
Representatives from the City of Champaign's Equity and Engagement Department, Janel Gomez and April Rosché, joined Karen Muchin of the Metropolitan Mayor’s Caucus (MMC) on March 5, 2025, to visit local organizations benefiting from the Supporting Municipalities for Asylum Seekers Services (SMASS) III grant. The purpose was to assess how these funds are aiding asylum seekers by promoting stability and inclusion.
The MMC is instrumental in distributing state funds that bolster such local initiatives. Among the recipients of this program are The City of Champaign Township, Cunningham Township, The New American Welcome Center, and The Refugee Center. During these visits, the organizations highlighted their programs made possible through this funding.
The meetings facilitated open discussions where partners shared both successes and challenges they encounter. This exchange provided valuable insights into the impact of their efforts and aims to enhance collaborative strategies to better support vulnerable populations.
