Former Illini defensive lineman Antonio James has been appointed as the assistant defensive line coach for the Illinois football program, as announced by head coach Bret Bielema. James transitions to this role from Southern Illinois, where he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the past two seasons.
"Antonio's experiences as a coordinator and former Illinois football player will bring tremendous value to our program," stated Bielema. "He has a deep understanding of our university, the state of Illinois, and extensive experiences coaching defensive linemen. We are excited to get Coach James back to Champaign."
James expressed his enthusiasm about returning to his alma mater: "My family and I are happy to be a part of Illini nation," he said. "We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Coach Bielema, the staff, and the University of Illinois. I am honored to come back to my alma mater and follow the lead that Coach Bielema and his staff have set."
During his tenure at Southern Illinois, James initially took on the role of defensive line coach in 2022 before being promoted. Under his leadership in 2023, SIU's defense achieved high rankings in various statistical categories within FCS.
Before joining Southern Illinois, James spent six seasons at Morgan State University. There he held positions including defensive coordinator and co-special teams coordinator from 2018-21. His contributions were significant in shaping an aggressive defense that excelled in several areas during 2018.
James began his college coaching career at Michigan as a graduate assistant from 2014-16, focusing on the defensive line. His efforts contributed to Michigan achieving consecutive 10-win seasons during those years.
His coaching journey started at Urbana High School from 2011-13 after completing his playing career at Illinois.
As a player for Illinois from 2006-09, James was instrumental in leading the team to the Rose Bowl Game in 2008. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Illinois in 2010.
A native of Massillon, Ohio, James attended Washington High School where he earned All-Ohio First Team honors by The Associated Press during his senior year.
