No. 20 Illinois secured its first ranked win of the spring season by defeating No. 12 Michigan 5-2 at the Atkins Tennis Center on Saturday night. Despite initially losing the first set in five singles matches, Illinois managed to claim victory in four singles matches and secure the doubles point for only the second time this season.

The victory extended Illinois' winning streak to four matches, improving their record to 5-2 for the 2025 campaign. Head coach Brad Dancer expressed satisfaction with the performance, acknowledging Michigan's strong team: "A lot of positives on the night. First off, Michigan has great coaches and great players, so it's always going to be a challenge to go against them."

Coach Dancer also praised several individuals for their contributions: "Huge shoutout to our fans who came out and to our sports medicine staff, especially Erika King." He highlighted Max's debut in doubles as well as Kenta Miyoshi's consistent composure. Debru's growth and Will Mroz's determination were also commended: "I'm thrilled with his growth... The thing that probably turned the entire match around was Will's toughness and composure."

Illinois clinched the doubles point with victories from Mathis Debru/Max Mroz at No. 3 and Kenta Miyoshi/William Mroz at No. 2 doubles positions.

In singles play, after Michigan leveled by winning at No. 3 singles, Kenta Miyoshi delivered another ranked win against Benjamin Kittay on Court 1 with a straight-set victory.

Zach Viiala provided an essential win for Illinois at No. 6 singles following a three-set comeback against Alex Cairo. Meanwhile, Mathis Debru secured his fourth consecutive singles win and his first match-clinching victory of the season.

The final fixture saw Will Mroz complete a comeback from one set down to secure another win for Illinois.

Next weekend, No. 20 Illinois will travel south for a doubleheader against UTRGV and No. 18 Baylor on March 1st.
