Richard C. "Itch" Jones, a renowned figure in college baseball coaching, passed away at the age of 87 in Gore, Oklahoma. He had been battling Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease for nearly three years, surpassing his initial prognosis significantly.
"Itch leaves an unfillable void in our world and the baseball community," said Illinois head coach Dan Hartleb. "He was ahead of his time with his baseball teachings and innovative drills. He was blessed with one of the best minds in the game of baseball."
Jones is survived by his wife Sue, their children Michael and Susan, and grandchildren Richard and Micah. Born on February 15, 1938, he earned his nickname "Itchy" after using a fly swatter to relieve itching from a cast as a child.
His coaching career began at MacMurray College before moving to Southern Illinois University (SIU) where he achieved significant success. Jones' record includes 1,240 wins over 39 years with notable achievements at both SIU and the University of Illinois.
At SIU, Jones led teams to seven Missouri Valley Conference titles and multiple NCAA tournaments. His tenure at Illinois included winning Big Ten Championships in 1998 and 2005.
Jones was recognized as MVC Coach of the Year four times and received national accolades including NCAA Division I Diamond Baseball Coach of the Year in 1990.
Throughout his career, Jones mentored numerous players who advanced to Major League Baseball including Dave Stieb and Steve Finley. His influence extended beyond players to colleagues like Dan Hartleb who succeeded him as head coach at Illinois.
Jones' legacy is honored through various Hall of Fame inductions and tributes such as the dedication of Richard "Itchy" Jones Stadium at SIU following renovations.
A Celebration of Life event will be held later this year to commemorate his contributions to sports and education.
