Illinois baseball team secured a series win against Abilene Christian at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Illini came from behind with a six-run eighth inning to claim victory over the Wildcats.
Greg LaChance played a pivotal role by hitting a two-out, two-run single that broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. This was followed by Drake Westcott's two-run home run, his second in consecutive games, providing Illinois with additional insurance runs.
Julius Sanchez delivered an impressive performance on the mound for Illinois in his first start of the season. He pitched seven innings, allowing only one run and achieving a career-high of ten strikeouts. Ryan Daly contributed by earning the win from the bullpen, giving up just one run over two innings.
The game began with both teams struggling to score until Abilene Christian took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The Wildcats managed to keep Illinois' offense at bay until late in the game, limiting them to only two baserunners between the third and seventh innings.
Sanchez's strong pitching kept Illinois competitive as he retired opponents consecutively during the fourth and fifth innings and added more strikeouts in the sixth and seventh innings. Despite this effort, Abilene Christian extended their lead to 2-0 in the eighth inning.
Illinois responded dramatically in their half of the eighth inning when Jack Zegib led off with a single, ending a streak of 12 straight Illini batters being retired. A sequence of plays including Will Johannes being hit by a pitch and Cameron Chee-Aloy's bunt single set up Nick Groves' bases-loaded walk that put Illinois on the scoreboard. Vytas Valincius tied it up with a sacrifice fly before LaChance's decisive hit gave Illinois the lead they would not relinquish.
Daly finished off Abilene Christian with three quick outs in the ninth inning to seal Illinois' victory.
Looking ahead, Illinois is set to face Texas State for another three-game series starting Friday in San Marcos, Texas.
