Illinois wrestling narrowly defeated by Rutgers due to tiebreaker

The Illinois wrestling team, ranked 11th nationally, faced a narrow defeat against the 13th-ranked Rutgers team in a dual meet held in Piscataway, New Jersey. The final score was 16-15 in favor of Rutgers after both teams won five bouts each. The match was decided on tiebreaking criteria, with Rutgers edging out Illinois by match points, 38-34.

Lucas Byrd, ranked fourth at 133 pounds for Illinois, improved his season record to 13-1 with a close 6-5 decision over Dylan Shawver from Rutgers. Kannon Webster achieved the largest margin of victory for Illinois with an 8-1 decision against Andrew Clark at the 149-pound category. Webster now holds a season record of 10-4.

Braeden Scoles secured a win at the 165-pound weight class with a score of 4-1 over Anthony White. Edmond Ruth triumphed in overtime against Shane Cartagena-Walsh at the 184-pound division with a score of SV-1 4-1. Zac Braunagel concluded Illinois' victories by defeating John Poznanski at the 197-pound category with a decision of 4-2.

Illinois will next compete against Purdue at home on February 1st at Huff Hall.
