Senator Chapin Rose has reintroduced Senate Bill 182 to permanently ban carbon dioxide storage under the Mahomet Aquifer. The aquifer is a crucial source of drinking water for nearly one million residents in central Illinois.

"Clean water is not negotiable," stated Senator Rose, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the aquifer from potential risks associated with CO2 storage. These risks include the formation of carbonic acid and the mobilization of hazardous contaminants like arsenic.

Last summer, following Governor JB Pritzker's signing of SB 1289, which permitted carbon sequestration under the aquifer, Senator Rose initially introduced legislation to prohibit such activities. The decision to allow CO2 storage met significant opposition from both bipartisan legislators and local communities.

Governor Pritzker's allies in the Democratic supermajorities controlling the Illinois General Assembly previously rejected a similar bill co-advanced by Senator Rose and Senator Paul Faraci during the fall veto session. The bill was not allowed a vote in committee by Democratic leadership.

"It's beyond belief that Governor Pritzker would prioritize the industry interests of his billionaire buddies over the safety of our water supply," said Senator Rose. He criticized the administration for ignoring expert warnings and bipartisan concerns urging a veto on previous legislation allowing CO2 storage.

Senator Rose remains committed to advocating for clean water and intends to push forward with Senate Bill 182 in this new session of the Illinois General Assembly. He also encourages public support through a petition available on his website.
