Illinois secured a 73-50 victory over Southern Indiana at the State Farm Center on Sunday, marking their 50th win under third-year head coach Shauna Green. This achievement ties Green with Hall of Fame coach Theresa Grentz as the fastest Illini head coach to reach this milestone.
Berry Wallace led Illinois with a career-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers and significant contributions in the second quarter. Adalia McKenzie added 16 points and contributed five rebounds and four assists. Genesis Bryant scored 12 points, achieved a season-high seven assists, and provided solid defensive support. Kendall Bostic recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
The game began with Genesis Bryant's opening three-pointer, setting an early tone for Illinois. After trailing at the end of the first quarter, Illinois found their rhythm in the second period with a decisive 15-0 run, holding Southern Indiana scoreless for nearly nine minutes.
Despite a brief resurgence from Southern Indiana in the fourth quarter, Illinois maintained control. The team concluded with a strong defensive performance, limiting Southern Indiana's scoring opportunities and ending the game on a dominant 14-1 run.
Coach Shauna Green commented on her team's progress: "The Illini held Southern Indiana to just four points in the second quarter." This defensive effort was complemented by Illinois' rebounding advantage and ability to capitalize on turnovers.
Looking ahead, Illinois will close its nonconference schedule against Southern at State Farm Center on Friday.
