Long-time college football coach Dana Dimel has passed away at the age of 62, as announced by his family. He is survived by his wife, Julie, and children, Winston and Josey.
Dimel had a 35-year career in coaching, including head coach positions at Wyoming, Houston, and UTEP. Most recently, he served as Senior Offensive Assistant for Illinois, contributing to their 9-3 record in 2024.
"Today is a difficult day for college football and our Illini famILLy," said Illinois head coach Bret Bielema. "Dana was an exceptional person, husband, father, friend, and football coach. He affected the lives of countless coaches, players, and staff members for more than three decades in college football. His influence on our program was incredible to witness and be a part of. His infectious positive energy had a major impact on me, our players, and everyone in our building every day. He will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family."
Dimel was part of Kansas State legend Bill Snyder's coaching tree and served three stints on Snyder's staff after playing as an All-American offensive tackle for the Wildcats from 1984-86. He briefly joined the Minnesota Vikings before starting his coaching career.
During his time at Kansas State over 19 seasons, Dimel contributed to 12 bowl teams' success. The Wildcats achieved significant milestones under his tenure including an 11-win season with a Big 12 Championship in 2012.
Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dimel compiled the most wins among active offensive coordinators from 2011-17 (61) while participating in eight consecutive bowl games. Over his extensive career spanning more than three decades as either head or assistant coach, he mentored numerous players who progressed to the NFL.
Dimel graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing from Kansas State in 1986. His son Winston also played collegiate football at Kansas State before transferring to play under him during Dimel’s first year as UTEP head coach.
