Illinois secured a 65-53 victory over Marquette at the State Farm Center, marking their second win of the season. The Illini's defensive efforts were pivotal in maintaining their unbeaten record.
Genesis Bryant was instrumental, scoring 15 of her 16 points in the second half and achieving an impressive 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. She also contributed four rebounds and one steal. Adalia McKenzie added 12 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds, including four offensive boards. Brynn Shoup-Hill scored 11 points, reaching double figures for the first time since January.
Gretchen Dolan made an impact off the bench with nine points and a steal. Illinois capitalized on free throws, converting 31 out of 35 attempts. Despite both teams starting slowly on offense, Illinois gained momentum early by drawing fouls and making free throws.
McKenzie scored Illinois' first field goal following an offensive rebound. Four starters contributed to the score within five minutes, keeping the game tight with a slight lead at the end of the first quarter. A key run in the second quarter extended Illinois' lead as they held Marquette scoreless for over four minutes.
Marquette managed to reduce their deficit before halftime, but Illinois finished strong to take a nine-point lead into the break. The Illini expanded their advantage to double digits early in the second half, responding effectively to any Marquette runs.
A late push from Marquette narrowed the gap slightly, but consistent free throw shooting helped Illinois secure their win by maintaining a significant lead towards the end of the game.
The Illini will next face Eastern Illinois as part of their season-opening homestand. Tipoff is scheduled for Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT on B1G+.
