Former Illini linebacker Scott Studwell will be the honorary captain for the Illinois football team as they face Minnesota on Saturday. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast on FS1.
Studwell, who was a team captain in 1976, led the Illini with 177 tackles that season and earned AP All-America Third Team honors. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the ninth round of the 1977 NFL Draft.
During his 14-season career with the Vikings from 1977 to 1990, Studwell became the team's all-time leading tackler with 1,981 tackles. He holds records for single-season tackles with 230 in 1981 and for making 24 tackles in a game against Detroit in 1985. He led the Vikings in tackles during eight seasons: from 1980 to 1985, and again in 1988 and 1989.
Studwell was selected for the Pro Bowl twice and was inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor in 2009. After retiring as a player, he pursued a career as an NFL scout.
