A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the City of Monticello on October 28, 2024. The request was made by us at Chambana Sun, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability in public institutions, we requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we asked for a list of all parking violations currently unpaid within the city's jurisdiction. The details requested include the name of the offender, their address, the amount due for each violation, the date of violation, and total due.
As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that this information will provide valuable insight into how parking regulations are enforced within the city and contribute towards holding public institutions accountable.
We have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional given our role in disseminating information to the public. We eagerly await a response from the City of Monticello regarding this request.
