Justin Stepp has been appointed as the wide receivers coach for the University of Illinois football team, as announced by head coach Bret Bielema. The contract awaits approval from the University of Illinois Board of Trustees in March.

Bielema expressed his enthusiasm for Stepp's appointment, stating, "I have admired Coach Stepp's career from afar and I am excited to welcome him to our Illini famILLy." He praised Stepp's leadership style and success in recruiting and developing NFL-caliber wide receivers. Bielema also mentioned that Stepp and his family would be valuable additions to both the football program and the local community.

Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney shared similar sentiments, saying, "I was extremely impressed with Justin's passion and knowledge for the receiver position when I worked with him for two years." Lunney highlighted Stepp's energy, recruiting skills, and ability to build meaningful relationships with student-athletes.

Stepp himself is eager to begin his role at Illinois. "I can't wait to get to Champaign and join Coach Bielema, Coach Lunney, and everyone in the Illinois football famILLy," he said. He expressed admiration for Bielema's coaching style and looked forward to working with the staff and players.

Stepp comes to Illinois after six seasons coaching wide receivers in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), where he coached several successful players who are now on professional rosters. Notably, Xavier Legette is projected as a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft under Stepp’s guidance at South Carolina.

During his tenure at South Carolina, Stepp led notable performances including All-SEC First Team recognition for a player in 2022. His work extended back through previous roles at Arkansas, SMU, Appalachian State, Clemson, North Greenville University, and Fort Mill High School.

Stepp’s career began as a standout player himself before transitioning into coaching roles across various institutions. He has been recognized nationally for his recruiting prowess by Rivals.

His personal life includes his wife Brooke and their two children. His twin brother Josh is an assistant football coach at Cincinnati.
