No. 2 Illinois men's gymnastics team faced a setback with their second loss of the season against No. 5 Nebraska, with a score of 416.550-406.050 on Sunday afternoon at Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Illini's record now stands at 11-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten competition, while the Cornhuskers improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
"We made a few too many uncharacteristic mistakes today," said head coach Daniel Ribeiro. "Nebraska had a day and beat us. This loss gives us some things to learn and grow from. We will do better next week."
Will Hauke achieved personal bests on both pommel horse (14.400) and parallel bars (14.650), securing the title win on parallel bars. Brandon Dang claimed the pommel horse title with a score of 15.150.
In the floor exercise, Connor McCool led the Illini with a score of 14.000, placing third, while Michael Fletcher and Garrett Schooley each scored 13.750.
On pommel horse, freshman Preston Ngai scored 13.750 following Dang and Hauke's performances, with Max Farkhadau adding a score of 13.250.
Reigning Still Rings National Champion Ashton Anaya recorded a score of 14.200 on still rings, narrowly missing first place by .10 points. Sebastian Ingersoll scored 13.700, followed by Schooley with a score of 13.500.
Amari Sewell led Illinois on vault with a score of 14.700 for second place; Ngai scored 14.350 and McCool added a score of 14.300.
Vahe Petrosyan delivered another strong performance on parallel bars with a score of 14.050 for third place, while Fletcher maintained momentum with a score of 13.950.
Schooley achieved a career high on high bar with a score of 13.500 for second place; Ryan Vanichtheeranont scored 13.250 and Fletcher added a score of 13.100.
Looking ahead, Illinois will host No.7 Ohio State for Senior Day on March 16 at Huff Hall at 2 p.m CT.
