Both Ashlyn Philpot and Laynie Smith have successfully transitioned from club volleyball teammates to college athletes at Illinois, achieving their dream of playing in the Big Ten. Despite initial doubts about their abilities, both players worked diligently through high school and now play significant roles in their freshman seasons.

Smith, who began her volleyball journey at age 12 in Durham, North Carolina, initially struggled with self-confidence but eventually embraced the sport. "My mindset has always been, 'I'm gonna do as much as I can to make sure I can be on the court,'" she said. Her determination led her to join Triangle Volleyball Club, where she honed her skills alongside other aspiring college athletes.

Philpot's path was similar; she started playing at age 10, inspired by her mother who played collegiately. Initially unsure of her talent, Philpot found motivation through Triangle Volleyball Club despite a long commute from Greenville, North Carolina. "I knew that I wanted to play in college," Philpot stated.

The two athletes first played together during their 16s season at Triangle Volleyball Club and became close friends. They supported each other through the recruitment process for college volleyball teams. Philpot committed to Illinois in June 2022 and encouraged Smith to consider joining her without pressuring her decision.

Smith eventually decided to attend Illinois as well, citing the Big Ten's competitive nature as a major draw. "I always dreamed of playing in the Big Ten because that's what I thought was the pinnacle of volleyball," Smith explained.

Both players joined Illinois in summer 2024 and quickly earned spots in the starting lineup. Smith made an impressive debut with double-digit kills and received all-tournament honors early in her collegiate career. Philpot also excelled defensively with multiple blocks and all-tournament recognition.

Reflecting on their achievements so far, Smith expressed satisfaction with her progress: "It's been so fulfilling to have all my hard work pay off." Meanwhile, Philpot emphasized continuous improvement: "Every practice, we give it our all so we can be impactful."

As they continue their journey at Illinois, both players remain focused on contributing positively to their team while striving for personal growth.
