Illinois outside linebacker Gabe Jacas has been recognized as the Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Player of the Week, according to an announcement by the Walter Camp Football Foundation on Tuesday. In a recent game against #24 Michigan, Jacas recorded 13 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries, and a forced fumble, contributing significantly to Illinois' 21-7 victory.
Jacas is not the first Illini player to receive this honor this season; Xavier Scott was previously awarded for his performance against Kansas.
During the match against Michigan, Jacas achieved personal bests in both tackles and sacks. All of his sacks occurred in the fourth quarter, playing a crucial role in holding Michigan to its lowest point total in ten years.
Jacas' performance places him at the top for most sacks by a player in a Big Ten Conference game this season. He now ranks tied for 12th nationally with 5.5 sacks for the season.
Currently ranked #20 in the AP Top 25 poll, Illinois is preparing for their upcoming game against #1 Oregon on Saturday in Eugene.
