The Illinois swim and dive team concluded their participation in the Boilermaker Invite on Saturday, November 18. The event took place in West Lafayette, Indiana, where the team secured third place with a total of 497 points. Junior Paloma Canos Cervera made a significant impact by achieving the sixth-fastest time in the program's history for the 1650 freestyle, clocking in at 16:47.10 and securing third place in the finals.
Sophomore Sara Jass finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke finals with a time of 2:14.96, while fellow sophomore Alexis Wendel came sixth in the 200 butterfly finals at 2:02.37. Junior Suvana Baskar improved her personal best by over three seconds in the 200 backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:00.32 and tying for eleventh place alongside junior Sydney Stoll.
In relay events, senior Lily Olson, junior Logan Kuehne, Stoll, and senior Laurel Bludgen collaborated to achieve a sixth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.39.
New personal bests were set by freshman Kalina Nikolaeva (2:02.31) and senior Paige Koscielski (2:05.45) in the 200 backstroke category. Senior Lauren Beard recorded her best time of 17:14.80 in the finals for the 1650 freestyle event, while freshman Martina Cibulkova achieved her best timing of 51.76 seconds during her lead-off leg for the B relay team’s effort in the preliminaries.
The platform dive finals saw freshmen Bethany Mercer and Elle Crisostomo make their debuts; Mercer scored ninth place with a score of 181.40 points and Crisostomo placed twelfth scoring at 160.65 points.
The Illinois swimming and diving team will continue their competition tomorrow at Purdue's long course time trials scheduled to begin at nine o'clock Central Time.
