The Illinois swimming and diving team participated in the Boilermaker Invite on Thursday, November 16, in West Lafayette, Indiana. At the end of day one, the team was positioned third with a total of 183 points. A highlight of the event was junior Suvana Baskar breaking the school's record for the 100 backstroke as part of the 400 medley relay, achieving a time of 53.90 seconds.
Junior Logan Kuehne delivered a notable performance in the finals by recording the eighth-fastest time in program history for the 50 freestyle at 23.15 seconds, securing sixth place overall.
The team's 200 freestyle relay members, senior Lily Olson, junior Logan Kuehne, junior Molly Yetter, and senior Laurel Bludgen finished third with a time of 1:32.40. This performance narrowly missed entering the program's top-10 records by .16 seconds.
In individual events, junior Sydney Stoll placed fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.92, closely followed by sophomore Sara Jass who finished fifth at 2:02.34. Junior Paloma Canos Cervera achieved a personal best in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.33 to secure tenth place; sophomore Adelaide Reaser followed closely behind in eleventh place with a time of 4:55.08.
The Illini's participation concluded on day one with their ninth-place finish in the 400 medley relay comprising Stoll, Jass, Kuehne, and Olson clocking in at 3:44.66.
Other athletes also set personal records during this initial phase of competition. Senior Lauren Beard and Martina Cibulkova recorded new bests in the 500 freestyle with times of 4:57.13 and 5:03.77 respectively. Freshman Kylee Sessions set her personal best in the 200 IM at 2:04.49 while freshmen Marin McAndrew and Maggie Adler improved their personal times in the 50 freestyle to record times of 23.82 and 23.92 respectively.
In diving events on three-meter boards, senior Taylor Michael led for Illinois by placing sixth with a score of 283.55 while freshman Matilda Garcia came ninth scoring at 254.35 points.
Illinois will continue its participation tomorrow for day two of competition at Boilermaker Invite beginning preliminaries at 9:30 a.m., followed by finals starting from around five p.m Central Time.
