Illinois volleyball team secured a victory over Maryland with a sweep at Huff Hall on Sunday afternoon. The win improved the Fighting Illini's record to 13-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Terrapins fell to 10-9 on the season and 1-7 in the Big Ten.
The Illini achieved a hitting percentage of .302 during the match, accumulating 39 kills. Brooke Mosher led with 23 assists and contributed five aces. Raina Terry was instrumental with 15 kills, achieving a hitting percentage of .454. On defense, Cari Bohm recorded eight blocks, and Christina Martinez Mundo collected 11 digs.
In the first set, Maryland initially led 9-4 and maintained a lead until Illinois called a timeout at 19-15. Afterward, Illinois took control with a 6-1 run capped by a Terry kill and closed out the set with a score of 28-26.
Averie Hernandez started the second set with an ace, helping Illinois establish an early lead of 5-0. Despite Maryland's efforts to come back with three consecutive aces making it 16-10, Illinois responded strongly with another run to win the set at 25-17 after another kill from Terry.
The third set saw both teams tied at several points before Maryland gained a slight edge at 19-15. However, Illinois executed another decisive run under Mosher's service line leadership to secure their advantage. Terry concluded both sets two and three with kills that ensured Illinois' victory at scores of 25-17 and 25-23 respectively.
Looking ahead, Illinois will travel to Lincoln for their next match against #2 Nebraska on Friday evening.
