The Fighting Illini wrestling team is preparing to compete in the 59th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championship, scheduled for December 29-30 at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. This event will feature 42 men's programs, including eight teams from the Big Ten: Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers, and Wisconsin.

This tournament marks the only regular season competition for the Orange and Blue before they begin their Big Ten dual season in the new year. The Illini currently hold a record of 3-3 this season and are looking forward to achieving individual success at the Midlands.

The schedule for Friday includes a first session at 9:30 a.m., covering championship rounds one through three and wrestlebacks on ten mats. The second session begins at 7:00 p.m., featuring quarterfinals and additional wrestlebacks.

On Saturday, events commence with a third session at 11:00 a.m., which will include semifinals, consolation matches, seventh place matches, and the beginning of the women's division on eight mats. The fourth session starts at 6:05 p.m., showcasing first, third, and fifth place matches across both men's and women's divisions on four mats. An awards ceremony will conclude the event at 9:00 p.m., preceded by inductions into the Midlands Hall of Fame.

Three Illinois wrestlers who placed last year are returning to compete in this year's tournament. Redshirt junior Edmond Ruth is set to defend his title in the 174-pound category after defeating Nick Incontera (Penn) with a score of 4-1 last year. Redshirt sophomore Dylan Connell aims to improve upon his fifth-place finish in the 184-pound category from last year when he secured victory over Anthony Carman (West Virginia) with a quick fall in just 30 seconds. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Danny Pucino returns after claiming seventh place last year in the 141-pound category with a major decision win over Josh Mason (Bloomsburg).
