The Illinois men's track and field team participated in the 64th annual Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday, April 18, in Walnut, California. Senior Aiden Ouimet completed his first decathlon of the 2024 outdoor season by breaking his own school record with a score of 7,794 points, securing ninth place in the competition.
Ouimet's top performance was in the 1500m event, where he achieved a personal-best time of 4:37.74. He also finished fifth in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.70 meters (15-5). Additionally, Ouimet delivered the sixth-best javelin throw of the day at 55.66 meters (182-7), placed tenth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.74 seconds, and came fifteenth in discus with a throw measuring 40.86 meters (134-0).
Freshman Eleftherios Kontonikola secured eighth place in the elite section of the javelin event with a throw measuring 65.26 meters (214-1). Freshman Kyle Clark made his debut for Illinois in the 3000m steeplechase collegiate division and finished third with a time of 9:17.46. Senior Will Merrick competed in the elite section of the same event and ended up eighteenth with a time of 9:10.94.
The Illinois track and field teams are set to continue their participation on Friday, April 19, for day three of the Mt. SAC Relays starting at 11 a.m., Central Time for field events and at 1 p.m., Central Time for track events.
