The Fighting Illini have achieved several milestones in their WBIT journey. Illinois was among the 32 teams to participate in the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT), marking a significant moment for the program.
After defeating Tulsa in the quarterfinals, Illinois advanced to the semifinals for the first time in a non-conference postseason competition. Their match against top-seeded Washington State on Monday marked another first as it was their debut game in April. The Illini's decisive victory over Washington State secured them a spot in their first-ever non-conference postseason championship game.
Illinois is set to face Villanova on Wednesday night, aiming for their first postseason title. Senior Genesis Bryant reflected on this opportunity: "It just makes everything worth it," she said, acknowledging past challenges and expressing gratitude for competing for a championship.
As the lowest-seeded team remaining, Illinois faced tough odds but remained determined. They led by as many as 29 points during their 81-58 semifinal win over Washington State. Head coach Shauna Green emphasized the importance of starting strong: "We always talk about our start and coming out and winning the first five minutes," she stated.
The team's defense played a crucial role, forcing four turnovers in the first quarter alone. Senior Makira Cook highlighted their defensive strategy: "I feel like we bought into our pressure defense," she said, noting how this approach contributed to their offensive success with 22 points off turnovers.
For graduate student Camille Hobby, Wednesday's game will be her last college match. She expressed her appreciation for ending her college career with such an opportunity: "Being a grad student, having the opportunity to play for a championship is amazing," Hobby remarked.
Illinois will face Villanova at Hinkle Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday, with ESPN2 broadcasting the game. Despite being away from home, support from fans made them feel comfortable during Monday's semifinal win.
Bryant summed up their mindset going into Wednesday's final: "It's not how you start but how you finish," she said, hopeful about concluding their season successfully against Villanova.
