Illinois advances to Super Six in NCAA men's gymnastics championships

No. 4 men's gymnastics team has advanced to the Super Six after scoring 410.461 in the first round of the NCAA Championships at Covelli Center, Columbus, Ohio. The team placed third behind No. 1 Stanford and No. 5 Nebraska.

Stanford led with a score of 417.389, while Nebraska followed with 413.523. No. 8 Cal scored 407.158 to take fourth place, No. 9 Navy scored 396.290 for fifth place, and No. 12 Greenville scored 389.157 for sixth place.

Head coach Daniel Ribeiro expressed gratitude for advancing: "We don't take anything for granted," he said, adding that they are proud to reach the final day of competition and will make necessary adjustments moving forward.

Connor McCool achieved the highest floor score of the day with a score of 14.766, while Brandon Dang topped pommel horse scores with a mark of 15.000, and Ryan Vanichtheeranont had the top high bar score at 13.966.

Tate Costa set a new career-high in all-around scoring with an impressive total of 81.999.

In event breakdowns:

- On parallel bars, Michael Fletcher led Illinois with a score of 14.100.

- For high bar performances, Costa scored a notable 13.700.

- On floor exercises, Costa followed McCool's lead by scoring a solid 14.133.

- In pommel horse routines, Preston Ngai earned a strong score of 14.300.

- Ashton Anaya excelled on still rings with one of the session's top scores at 14.133.

- Schooley achieved Illinois' highest vault score at an impressive mark of 14.500.

The Illinois team is set to compete again tomorrow against Stanford and Nebraska in the Super Six at Covelli Center at approximately six p.m., Central Time.
