Fighting Illini men's tennis secured a 4-1 victory against Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. This win improves Illinois' record to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while Wisconsin falls to 1-17 overall and remains winless in Big Ten action.
"We are learning a lot through this road trip," stated head coach Brad Dancer. "It's about solving the puzzle. You gotta pay attention. Alex Petrov did a great job today of making adjustments. We can be better but anytime you win on the road the guys have to show toughness."
In doubles competition, Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve defeated Michael Minasyan and Gabriel Huber with a score of 6-2. Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi clinched the doubles point by overcoming Tomas Zlatohlavek and Jason Hildebrandt with a decisive 6-1 victory.
The singles matches saw an initial setback with Debru's loss, leveling the match at 1-1. However, No. 83-ranked Miyoshi restored Illinois' lead by defeating Matthew Fullerton with scores of 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Jeremy Zhang continued this momentum by winning over Hildebrandt in two tiebreak sets, both scored at 7-6 (5) and 7-6 (2). William Mroz sealed the team's triumph by beating Zlatohlavek in three sets: 7-5, 4-6, and finally clinching it at 6-3.
Looking ahead, Illinois will host Northwestern and Saint Louis University on April 13 at Atkins Tennis Center.
