Redshirt senior catcher Jacob Schroeder has been recognized as the Big Ten Player of the Week, according to an announcement made by the conference.
Schroeder delivered an impressive performance, achieving 8-for-15 (.533) with nine runs scored, three doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, and four walks over four games. His on-base percentage was .632 while his slugging percentage reached 1.333.
A native of Chicago, Schroeder began the week with a strong showing against Missouri on March 26. He doubled, scored twice, and walked twice in that game before going 7-for-12 (.583) with seven runs, two doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, and two walks during Illinois' three-game sweep of Penn State. In the series finale on Saturday, he hit two home runs including a decisive grand slam in the fifth inning and drove in six runs.
Schroeder's performance extended his hitting streak to a career-high eight games. During this streak, he has achieved 13-for-30 (.433) with four doubles, five home runs, and 15 RBI. This streak has significantly improved his batting average from .192 to .321.
This is Schroeder's first time receiving conference weekly honors in his Illini career. He follows teammate Drake Westcott as the second Illinois player to receive such recognition this season.
