Missouri applied early pressure, leading to two saves by Illinois keeper Julia Cili within the first ten minutes. The Tigers capitalized on this momentum, scoring in the 14th minute from a free kick. In the final stages of play, Illinois maintained high intensity and spent most of their time on Missouri's side of the field. They earned three corners during this period but could not find an equalizing goal. Mya Archibald came closest with a header that narrowly missed wide of the post in the 87th minute.
