The Illinois Fighting Illini wrestling team is preparing to face Northwestern in their first Big Ten conference match of the season. The dual meet will take place on Saturday, January 20, at 2 p.m. CT in Huff Hall, Champaign, Illinois.

Freshman wrestler Kannon Webster made a significant impact last week by securing his first ranked win in dual action against Ohio State's Dylan D'Emilio. Webster, who was ranked No. 10 at the time, defeated D'Emilio with a score of 4-1.

Redshirt junior Edmond Ruth has been performing strongly this season. He extended his winning streak to seven matches and now holds a record of 12-1 after narrowly defeating Rocco Welsh from Ohio State with a 2-1 decision.

Northwestern comes into the match with a dual record of 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten conference. They suffered close defeats against Northern Illinois and Maryland earlier this season. Historically, Illinois leads the series against Northwestern with a record of 49-35-2 since their first meeting in 1922. In their last encounter on January 20, 2023, Northwestern emerged victorious over Illinois by tiebreakers.

Ruth leads the team with the highest number of dual points (22) and major decisions (6). Webster follows closely behind with an undefeated dual record (5-0) and ranks second on the team for dual points (15) and major decisions (4).

Joe Roberts has contributed significantly as well, scoring third-highest in dual points (12), while Danny Pucino has scored fourth-highest (11) and leads all starters in technical falls with two.
