Illinois men's gymnastics team heads to NCAA championships aiming for Super Six finals

The Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team, ranked No. 4, is set to conclude its season at the 2024 NCAA Championships. The event will take place at the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio. Illinois will compete in the qualifying round against several top teams, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 5 Nebraska, No. 8 Cal, No. 9 Navy, and No. 12 Greenville on Friday, April 19.

Illinois aims to finish in the top three to advance to the Super Six finals scheduled for Saturday, April 20.

Reflecting on past performances, Illinois secured third place in last year's Super Six for the first time since 2018 with a score of 415.590. In previous years, they finished sixth in both 2021 and 2022 after the championships were canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Historically, Illinois has won ten NCAA Championships with their most recent victory in 2012.

Top-ranked Stanford recently claimed first place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships with a score of 422.700 and boasts two event champions: Asher Hong on still rings and Khoi Young who excelled in vault, parallel bars and all-around.

Nebraska comes off a strong performance at the Big Ten Championships with a score of 407.350 where Asher Cohen and Taylor Christopulos achieved notable placements.

Cal finished third at the MPSF Championships with standout performances from Aidan Li on pommel horse and Jasper Smith-Gordon on vault.

Navy won the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships scoring a total of 401.450 with Riley Rose securing victories on still rings and high bar among others.

Greenville placed second at ECAC Championships with Zach Connelly excelling on floor and Logan Watterson on vault.
