Fighting Illini soccer faced a challenging match against Michigan State on Thursday night, resulting in a 2-1 loss at DeMartin Stadium. The game marked Illinois' fourth encounter with a ranked opponent this season, leaving their record at 6-7-3 overall and 2-5-2 in Big Ten play.
Despite the rain and cold conditions, Illinois managed to hold Michigan State's attack to just one shot on goal during the first half-hour. In the 38th minute, Abby Lynch created an opportunity for Illinois by driving down the left wing and delivering a low cross into the penalty area. Zoey Kollhoff capitalized on this chance, scoring her first career goal after her shot deflected off a defender.
The lead was short-lived as Michigan State quickly responded with a penalty kick just 42 seconds later, equalizing the score. By halftime, Michigan State had taken control of the offensive game with a significant advantage in shots.
In the second half, Illinois goalkeeper Julia Cili made several impressive saves to keep her team in contention. However, she was eventually beaten by a well-placed shot from Michigan State in the 59th minute. Cili finished the match with seven saves, bringing her season total to 82—the highest among Big Ten goalkeepers.
Illinois continued to search for an equalizer but couldn't find success before time ran out. Their best chance came in the 85th minute when Lia Howard's attempt was blocked inside the area.
Looking ahead, Illinois will conclude its regular season against No. 25 Nebraska at Demirjian Park on Sunday at noon CT.
