Fighting Illini soccer secured a 3-2 victory over Pepperdine at Demirjian Park, marking their second home win of the season. The match was held on Senior Day, with ten seniors honored before kickoff. Illinois now holds a record of 4-2-1.
The game started with an early opportunity for Illinois in the fifth minute when Makala Woods set up Zoey Kollhoff, but her shot was saved by the keeper. Pepperdine took the lead five minutes later after scoring from a corner kick.
Illinois responded in the 33rd minute as Sydney Stephens scored following a well-coordinated play involving Lia Howard and Woods, leveling the score at 1-1. At halftime, Pepperdine led in shots 10-4, while Julia Cili made five saves for Illinois.
In the second half, Kennedy Berschel earned a penalty for Illinois in the 54th minute. Although her attempt was saved, Sarah Foley capitalized on the rebound to give Illinois a 2-1 advantage. Despite pressure from Pepperdine and multiple crucial saves by Cili, Pepperdine equalized in the 73rd minute.
The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Stephens scored again after receiving a cross from Woods, securing Illinois' win with just over two minutes remaining. The Illini defense successfully defended against a final corner from Pepperdine to maintain their lead.
Illinois will face Iowa next Sunday as they begin Big Ten play.
