Fighting Illini soccer faced a tough loss against No. 12 Wisconsin, ending with a 1-0 scoreline on Thursday night at Demirjian Park. The defeat places the team at 5-6-3 for the season and 1-4-2 in Big Ten play.
The match started as a defensive struggle, with neither team creating clear opportunities in the first half. Illinois goalkeeper Julia Cili was first tested in the 27th minute, making a comfortable save from a long-range shot. She further showcased her skills with two notable saves in the 34th and 42nd minutes, keeping the game goalless by halftime.
In the second half, Illinois increased their offensive efforts starting from the 63rd minute, earning four corner kicks within ten minutes. Mya Archibald nearly capitalized on one of these corners but missed her shot wide of the net.
Ellen Persson had perhaps Illinois' best chance to score in the 68th minute when she connected with Bel Rolley's corner kick. Her header hit the post instead of finding its way into the goal.
Rolley continued to provide quality crosses, including an opportunity for Sydney Stephens in the 81st minute during a counterattack. However, Stephens' headed attempt was blocked.
The game seemed poised to end without goals until Wisconsin capitalized on a free kick awarded with less than twenty seconds left on the clock. They scored just eight seconds before full time to secure their victory.
Illinois will look to bounce back when they face Purdue at Demirjian Park this Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT.
