Counties throughout Illinois participated in the annual 4-H Can Make a Difference Food Drive, which took place alongside the Illinois State Fair from August 11 to 13. This initiative, ongoing for over 25 years, encourages counties to gather non-perishable food and care items to combat hunger in the state.
Katie Duitsman, a youth development specialist with University of Illinois 4-H, highlighted the issue: “In Illinois, over a million people face hunger, which translates into 1 in 12 people facing hunger or 1 in 9 children.”
The event successfully collected more than 1,300 items during its three-day run. Andrea Schaffnit from Adams County's Youth Leadership Team noted the drive's impact: “The food drive was very successful this year... The canned food drive was also a great way to help spread awareness about food insecurity and how 4-H members can make a difference.”
Participating counties engaged in friendly competition to see who could contribute the most items. DuPage County led the donations, followed by Vermilion and Cook Counties. The initiative is organized by the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team and marks its second year of planning.
Ross Vancil of Henderson County expressed pride in the collective effort: "It is amazing to see 4-H members from all over the state come together... I am grateful to be able to help coordinate this event and see what a difference an organization like 4-H can make."
This community service event will return at next year's State Fair in summer 2024.
Illinois 4-H is part of University of Illinois Extension's youth development program. It aims to empower young people through hands-on experiences that foster leadership skills.
