Illinois soccer (4-5-2, 0-3-1) lost to Nebraska (4-6-0, 1-3-0) with a score of 1-0 at Hibner Stadium in Lincoln. Despite nine saves from Illinois keeper Izzy Lee, the Huskers scored the only goal of the match in the 58th minute from a corner kick.
The match began quietly with no shots on goal in the first 20 minutes due to strong defensive efforts from both teams. In the 23rd minute, Nebraska had a chance to score when an attacker found space at the back post after a deflection on a corner kick. However, Kennedy Berschel cleared the shot off the line to keep it scoreless.
Lee made three routine saves in the first half, but Illinois could not challenge the Nebraska keeper in their attacking plays.
Nebraska applied pressure early in the second half with several corner kicks. Lee made two notable diving saves in the 53rd and 58th minutes, tipping both shots over the bar. However, Nebraska eventually scored from a corner kick in the 58th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Stellon forced a save in the 63rd minute as Illinois sought an equalizer. This was their last shot on target for the match.
Lee made six saves in total during the second half to keep Illinois competitive throughout, but they were unable to score and ultimately lost 1-0.
Illinois will next play against Maryland on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
