Sophia Beckmon secured a silver medal in the long jump at the U20 World Athletics Championships on Wednesday, August 28, at Estadio Atlético de la VIDENA in Lima, Peru. Beckmon achieved a leap of 6.54m (21-5 1/4), finishing just four centimeters behind Delta Amidzovski of Australia.
Beckmon initially took the lead with an impressive 6.48m (21-3) jump on her first attempt. Amidzovski responded with a 6.49m (21-3 1/4) leap on her second attempt to take the lead. Both athletes had shorter or foul jumps in their third and fourth attempts but recorded their best marks during their fifth attempts. Beckmon temporarily reclaimed the lead with her 6.54m jump before Amidzovski secured victory with a personal best of 6.58m (21-7).
With this silver medal, Beckmon heads into her sophomore campaign for the Fighting Illini with significant momentum. She aims to surpass her Big Ten and school record mark of 6.86m (22-6 1/4) and capture both Big Ten and NCAA titles.
Elizabeth Ndudi, Beckmon's teammate and fellow sophomore, also competed in this event, placing sixth with a jump of 6.18m (20-3 1/4), which she recorded on her fifth attempt.
